about

Instrumental dedication to Alena Synkova:
Alena Synkova was born in Prague on September 24th, 1926. When she was finishing the first grade, her mother passed away from cancer. Her father remarried, but his second wife also passed away from cancer after 5 years. Shortly before a ban on mixed marriages, Alena’s father married for a third time, a marriage that initially protected him from transport. Alena, however, was summoned for transport in December of 1942, at the age of 16 years old.

Upon her arrival at Terezin, using her stepmother’s background, Alena reported that she was half-Jewish. She was unaware at that time that her transport was the first that carried those this a mixed religious background. Otherwise, she would have been found out. Alena credits her survival to this moment, as it protected her from further transport. Alena remained at Terezin until the camp’s liberation in May of 1945, after which she returned to her hometown of Prague.

Of the 15,000 children who passed through Terezin, Alena was one of the less than 100 that survived. She passed away in 2008, at the age of 82.
